The future of personal finance is here.
Three years ago, Personal Finance Economics (PFE) on Substack was launched to help individuals and households make better personal finance decisions by bringing what we know today from economic science. Motivated by a personal finance class I teach at SMU, I saw a need and interest in a new information source broader than an investment newsletter or piecemeal tips about personal finance. One that tied together solutions to personal finance choices of real people, poor or rich, who are interested in learning how to improve their financial lives. 1
The growth in subscribers has been encouraging and incremental. Then, an invitation I posted a few weeks ago went viral. Word is spreading. I’ve heard from retirees who want to do their best on a fixed income to advocates for crypto. I have read every comment and responded to many of them. 1,800 new subscribers have jumped on board in the last 30 days.
As of this writing, PFE has 4,400 subscribers and appears near the sweet spot I expected when I started this endeavor: there is demand for learning and relatable exchanges about personal finance. (By the way, the above note is still active if you have a thought.)
Time for a new addition.
What is Coming?
In 2025, I will host short-form classes on everything from understanding your current spending to building your baseline financial plan. Personal Finance Economics on Substack will remain, and subscribers who want to drill down and take a few classes with notes and lectures on their own time will find Personal Finance Economics on Teach:able. Here is a glimpse of a draft of the entry page that will go live in January.
