Personal finance begins with understanding how you spend your money. A roadblock can be tabulating spending for the past couple of months.

I have found Monarch Money to be a good organizational tool for rolling up transactions by expense category. The online software mostly avoids the trappings of competitors that want us to enable and use their investment advice.

I have a time-tested spreadsheet tool I use with my students in Chapter 1 of the book. Attached here for paids and VIPs below the paywall.

My learning suggestion: Work through Lesley Robert’s problem, which will help you understand the expense listing and the worksheet. I have used Lesley at #SMU. Then, you will be ready to move on to your expenses to understand your current consumption.
